DJ Profile: DJ Jaz

Posted on December 1, 2011 by webmaster

Based in Atlanta, Ga., Jasmeet  Singh aka DJ Jaz has been DJing and entertaining crowds for the past 15 plus years. Quickly realizing his love and passion for music and entertaining, DJ Jaz has grown his services into a complete entertainment company (named GTB Productions) providing a variety of services specifically catered to every event.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ? What types of events do you do?
I started DJing in high school after attending a few local parties with some friends. I was completely mesmerized with the power and control that a DJ carries in controlling a crowd on the dance floor and the fixation set in from there on. I started visiting the local music stores almost every week and spending hours and hours on getting first-hand experience on real equipment DJ equipment and honing my skills. At that point, I asked my friends and family to finance my very first set of DJ equipment and lighting gear. Finally after a few weeks, I had my brand new set. I spent hours in my basement every night mixing, practicing and creating mix tapes for friends. I also made friends with local DJs learned as much as I could from them. I finally got my big break and was asked to DJ a private event for a good family friend and there was no looking back. My love for music and holding a crowd on the dance floor just kept growing, and it continues to grow. I have been DJing for the past 15 years and specialize in weddings, private parties, club events and corporate events.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
This is a full time job for me. With the travel and all the additional services we offer, this has been my full-time profession.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup? What are you looking to add?
We have an extensive collection of CHAUVET® products including: COLORpalette, Q-Spot 260-LED moving heads, scanners, gobo lights, follow spots, ellipsoidals, etc. I’m not necessarily restricted to a certain brand, but I am really impressed with the COLORpalette fixtures.  I am constantly looking to add to our arsenal of lighting gear with new equipment that implements the latest and the greatest technology.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
COLORpalette.  I am simply amazed on how intelligently these fixtures are and how they produce an amazing synchronized light show.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Practice, practice, practice. Buying the equipment alone does not make you a DJ. You have to work at it and spend time getting to know your equipment. Understand the functionality of your gear, know your music, and practice your mixing and transitioning techniques. Never think that you know everything there is to learn about DJing because you are never done learning. I continue to learn and grow from practicing and watching fellow DJs. Also, never play the same playlist at every single gig — monitor the crowd, cater to your audience and adapt accordingly.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
We actually specialize in Southeast Asian weddings and fusion weddings so the most requested songs typically change from every event. However, the most requested songs lately have been: LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” Pitbull’s “Give me Everything,” Nicki Minaj’s “SuperBass,” and Bollywood’s “Sheila ki Jawani.”
